Arrival

So excited to see this done!

kittycollects

It’s small, it’s cute, it’s only $25, and it’s just in time for Christmas!

My book has arrived, after a year and a half in the making! It’s been a long time coming, and so much has happened in the meantime. Whilst there have been many ups and downs, I’m pleased to say that my first foray into the world of published books is now available at all good bookstores! (how’s that for a sales pitch?)

A little bit about the book:

Recycled Chic is for those who aren’t content to look like everyone else. It both inspires and instructs on ways of recycling, renewing, and reinventing pre-loved fashion and fabrics. Featuring 30 simple and accessible projects, for even a novice seamstress, “Recycled Chic” will arm you with the techniques, inspiration and confidence to renew your existing clothes and accessories, or alter vintage fashion and fabric to suit your individual…

Fashion, Fun and Finishing a Marathon

Fashion:I went to the Ruby Room fundraiser on Saturday night, only to find the designer I had just clipped her photo from a magazine because I loved what she was doing and wanted to meet her, featured in the show!

Tina’s Gowns on the Ruby Room Runway

Tina Witherspoon is so talented. Her design concepts are full of whimsy and absolutely feminine! I love her work and all she is doing with using recycled materials. A woman after my heart- I made my first gown recycled gown in 1985- and I am now motivated to step back into designing again- all thanks to Tina Witherspoon and the Ruby Room. http://glamspoon.typepad.com/

You see I used to have a reason to make myself and my friends formal gowns regularly, my husband was in the military and there were one or two formal dress occasions a year and it was heaven for me. I always had a reason to sew. Well, he is no longer in the military and we live in Seattle the town known for its causal attire. However, Prom and homecoming live on as does the fashion scene. So my goal is to get my gowns on the Ruby Room runway for their fundraiser next year.

I will post gown photos as they progress, have a LOT of work to do between now and even the first gown, but putting it down here is exciting.

Fun: Ruby Room Runway- filling my mind with ideas, designs and models…..

Finishing a Marathon:Back in July I put up my goal to run a marathon and I was going to run the Portland Marathon for the Ben Towne foundation. Well, the week before the Portland Marathon I was going online to print up what I needed for the next weekend, only to discover my registration never went through!

At the finish line!

So, I scrambled and found that there was a marathon the next day where I went to school, Bellingham, so I grabbed my kids and we raced to Bellingham, praying the race wasn’t full.

We didn’t know where we would sleep (though we have family and friends we couldn’t reach them before we were on the road North) or if I was even running the race the next day. We got there at 4:30 p.m., registration closing at 6 p.m. and I got registration # 590. I found out later that the marathon was limited to 600 registrants and they filled it- so I was 10 slots from not running. So that was it- I was signed up for the Bellingham Bay Marathon.

We ended up staying with Papa and Wendy, and it was wonderful!

The next day I went down to the race, it was cold waiting and I had what I hoped was all I needed. When I got on the bus to go to the start the song “Fireflies” was playing- this is one of my songs with the boys so it was like a small hello from them. I sat and talked to a nice gal who was working on qualifying for Boston that day.

When we got to the Lummi Community Center I took my time walking around, going to the bathroom, then settled down with a group, on the edge, and listened. Their shirts all read “Marathon Maniacs” and they were amazing. What a fun group to sit by, they were all talking about doing “50 by 50” or how many they had done this year, how many were left in the season and if they were planning on traveling to any. When I shared this was my first run and my story of reorganizing a the last-minute they laughed with me and wished me luck, saying I had chosen a great race anyway, with the prayer ceremony at the start and it wasn’t too big.

The race started, me with my trash bag around my shoulders for warmth I had to ask one of the other trash bag wearing runners what the etiquette was on ditching the bags.. he filled me in he always kept it until a water station- so that’s what I did- what a fun look I had going with it tied around my waist for a mile or two! Anyway I used tights for arm warmers, had my blue hat and my Ben Towne shirt on- I decided at the last-minute not to wear the tutu- though I will next time!

The weather was gorgeous and the run starting along the water was just what I wanted. We met up with the half-marathon runners at our mile 17 and their mile 4- and I promptly lost all the people I had been pacing in the crowd! Lucky for me I was still feeling GREAT. I had done so much reading about mile 20 being a bit of a magic number- where you are going to be hurting or good. I felt wonderful. So the fun part for me, you see I am a middle of the pack runner and most of the time when I run a race I set my pace and stay there. So I rarely pass anyone after the race settles in.

This race was different, as we met the half-marthon group at mile 4, the people who had not trained well were starting to slow down, so those were the ones I met. I got to spend the REST of the RACE PASSING PEOPLE! This, outside of feeling wonderful, was the best part of the race for me!

I ended up coming in at 4:26- faster than I expected- because I had figured I would slow down. I maintained a perfect 10 minute pace for the whole race! I was so blessed and my first race was perfect. The only flaw was I told my mum to meet me at the finish line at 5 hours, and I missed them by finishing early!

I will run another marathon, not sure when, will spend my winter designing, and going to the gym. Next fitness goal is placing in my age group- probably in the Snoqualmie St. Patrick’s Day 5K- hopefully it won’t snow in 2013 for that race like it did this year!

Worst run in 10 years!

So, for all the runs I have taken in the last 10 years yesterday was the worst! Whether it was the food I ate for lunch, going in the early afternoon (not my normal time), the heat or something else. Yesterday’s 8 miles were the worst ever!

Now that I have that out I am still glad I went and didn’t quit. Days like yesterday remind me of why I love to run and make me appreciate all the runs that feel good.

You see, I love to run, love the meditative time I get and enjoy seeing where I live on foot. It gives me time to sort through things some days, time to not think on others. Either way running is something I have always loved.

So for all the days you may go out and your run stinks like mine did yesterday- use it like I do, to appreciate all the runs that DON’T!

Marathon- Starting training for my first

So, this year started with an amazing goal, to do the Tough Mudder in Whistler in June. Then my main support for my training was GONE for when I needed to ramp up my training! Sidelined by life- when something has to give the training for this was it.

I was feeling a bit bitter and jealous of anyone who got to do it!

How did I get to the Marathon?

First- I have wanted to do a marathon for some time.

Second- An amazing friend, Cheri Fiorucci, who writes on blogspot “the world through my shoes”, inspires me. She has run many marathons and helped me realize I could too!

Third- I got inspired. I went to a function back in May for the Ben Towne Foundation- and left inspired and committed to making a real difference with this charity. As I started combing their site I saw they had a team for the Portland Marathon- so this week I started. I am scared I won’t be ready but I will do my best and I am so excited to help increase awareness for the Ben Towne Foundation!

Wish me luck!

Imperfect Paleo and other thoughts

So this week for Tough Mudder was fun and had great highlights!

Here is the concept of Paleo in a nutshell

I ran one day and decided to spice it up this week with a Hot Yoga class on Saturday. That class was amazing. My run on Sunday my body felt totally different. My shoulders were loose and my stride was much smoother. I ran 8 strong miles instead of the 7 I planned. It was a great workout and many thanks go to Terra Yoga in Issaquah, WA for that class. I will now be adding Hot Yoga to my routine on a regular basis.

This week will have 4 runs in it and the Mud & Chocolate race on Saturday. Looking for another good time and this one in the mud. Should be great fun.

Just fyi I stink at the Paleo diet- so I am doing what I refer to as modified Paleo- which equals Paleo all day with one “cheat” per day. So I can eat one thing a day which is off the Paleo diet. This has kept me sane, not made much difference in my weight- not that I expected it to, but it has made it easier to improve what I am eating without constantly saying No to all the bad stuff. I get to say “Yes” once a day and that seems to be fitting just great.

Tough Mudder weeks 7&8 I got a PR in the SNOW!

Ok, the last two weeks have been putting my dedication to the test. Crazy schedules, changes, WET, COLD weather and the like!

Beauty and the Cold….we ran and ran…
Off of freedigitalphotos.net by Marcus74

March 12-18- Good week, got my set in on Monday, Ran on Wednesday 4+ miles, Roller Skated for 2 hours on Friday- yes you read it right- and it was a blast- made me miss competing! Followed Saturday with a PR on the 5K St Patrick’s Day run in Snoqualmie! On this run I was cold, my feet were numb for half the run, and my Ipod shut off because it got too cold- and I STILL got a PR of 27:43- Totally awesome! I was also SO proud of my eldest son for doing this run despite the snow and cold- he worked SO hard and it paid off.

Last wee- from the 19th-25th-

Did on set on Monday, Ran 4 miles and did a set on Wednesday, worked in my yard for 2 hours on Thursday and had a ROCKIN run on Sunday 6.5 miles strong and almost ran my entire hill without stopping- trust me if you saw the hill I was talking about you would be impressed!

Loving the payoff of eight weeks of steady running- spending the next two weeks doing Paleo, some fasting, and the Litvinov workout with a kettle bell- so if you see me swinging a kettle bell and then running away from it- don’t worry I will be back- again- and again -and again- so cheer me on!

My Tough Mudder Week 6 More Struggle!

So last week was another crazy week- great on lots of fronts but my hubby was away so managing the house solo is always different and it showed up in my workouts.

Last week I..

Wednesday went to the gym, ran 3 miles and then did half of a Belton set!

Thursday- Nada!

Friday- Again- Nada!

Saturday- you guessed it Nada!

Sunday- Had my BEST 5 3/4 mile run yet! The last six weeks of building up my base in running has really started to pay off! On Saturday I am running a 5K and I am shooting for PR of under 30 minutes – if you just laughed at how slow I am – stop reading!

Anyway, I am excited, my older son is running the 5k too, my younger is doing the 1k and my amazing hubby is supporting our youngest- AWESOME- and when we are done we will get food!

Loving Fit Bottom Girls Blog

http://fitbottomedgirls.com/2012/02/she-loves-me-she-loves-me-not-kristen-vs-the-treadmill/

Just got done reading the “she loves me, she loves me not post” by Kristen on Fit Bottom  Girls- great site and blog. Made me smile how many thoughts we had alike on enjoying the treadmill- push a button and it makes you go faster- to people watching. Awesome stuff.

All for tonight- tomorrow on to the gym for 3.5 miles and a set of Belton’s med ball slamfest!

Week #3 of My Tough Mudder Training

So this week was good, and for some reason I seem to not get training done on Thursdays which has been my plan. Anyway- for accountability here we go-

Monday – Crazy day getting ready for kid’s mid-winter break.

Tuesday- Happy Valentine’s Day and ran 3 miles.

Wednesday- Crazy day and family visit so no workout

Thursday- Another family day so no workout

Friday- To the gym and ran 3.5 miles and did 1/2 a round of Belton’s workout. I ran at an 8:30 pace on the treadmill- smoking fast for me.

Saturday- Did one full round of Belton’s workout, except still can’t do the full 10 sets of TRX mountain climbers with a push up- keep dying on the push-up part.

Sunday- Ran 4 miles, it was colder than I expected and came home with numb hands. Ooof.

Overall a good week, weighed in at 154.8 at the gym, good number.
